Ref: Ray's blog, 3/25/04 Haloscan wants me to shut up, but I found a way...:P
You raise a lot of good issues and make a lot of good points, and for the majority of your thread, I would have to agree with most of what you said. But let me ask you this: which came first, a crackdown by the authoritarian figures, or the seizure by young adults to live freely and do as they please?
During the student govt. elections at IU, I came across a ticket whose platform (from a flyer) read "Hoosier Party: more beer, more partying, more fun." Now, I'm all for having a good time at college and being able to look back on my college years and be satisfied with what I did and how I did it. But please, are you kidding me? Not even I, one who considers herself quite liberal in personal freedoms, would want to be represented by a ticket of students who run on a rickety platform slippery with alcohol. I apologize, I sort of went off on a tangent there, but my point is is that we don't live in a society that is or can be ruled solely by our twentysomething boozed-out wants and desires. You said so yourself, "they'll probably spend their windfall on beer..." So whose supposed to be the responsible one in this ideal world of no rules and no authority? I elect you, Ray, because you seem one who would have no problem with indulging in every single "damn right" you possess. Damn the man, save the empire.<--I'll drink to that.
(Did I completely miss your point?)
