This entry is in response to Ray's post for 7/1/04:

I don't always associate diamonds with romance. Case in point: for my 21st birthday or graduation, I wanted my mom to buy me a diamond ring. It's been tradition in our family to get diamonds for the girls either when they turn 21 or graduate from college.

I think perhaps you're looking at it from just one side of the multifacted big picture. Diamonds don't always buy affection, nor are they meant to. It wholey depends on the perspective of the giver as well as the receiver. I think maybe you're just trying to make excuses, much like many men these days, as to why you shouldn't make a commitment to save and buy one of these for someone.

I'm sorry, this may make me shallow and snooty, but if a man buys me a cheap cz from walmart, he is not the man for me. My perspective on that said event would be this: His commitment to me is worth $21.99, and frankly that's just not good enough for me. We all need justification, whether it comes in the form of an expensive diamond or a hallmark card. It's obviously up to the receiver what is good enough for him/her. The underlying objective here is not to buy a person's affection with a massively expensive diamond. And I know, I know--blame it on society. Well, that's bullshit.

Would you be satisfied with a woman expressing her heartfelt feelings for you by giving you a ring out of a gumball machine? Even disregarding monetary value, how much effort or thought did that just take? I don't know about you...maybe it's just me, but I deserve better than that, and I demand it. Period.

And along those same lines, what happened to "chivalry?" What has happened to the classic scenario of a man wanting only the best for the one he loves, so he saves his money until he can give his other the best of what he thinks she deserves? And it's not about money. It's about effort, commitment, respect, and thought. We may be living in a whole different world nowadays, but classics never die.

Sometimes when I'm supposed to be growing as a person, I really just feel like I'm sitting in a car during a traffic jam.
